Registration Status Codes. A registration status code (or codes, in the instance of combined ancestry and
hybridization record cats) shall be assigned to each cat registered by the association and will be indicated on the
registration certificate.
The following codes apply to the FIRST TWO positions of the pedigree status code:
a. Stud Book Codes: SB - The cat has no cats which are unknown, unregistered, or of another breed or
breed group within a standard three-generation pedigree.
b. Ancestry Record Codes:
1. O1 - The cat has at least one unknown or unregistered parent.
2. O2 - The cat has at least one unknown or unregistered grandparent.
3. O3 - The cat has at least one unknown or unregistered great grandparent.
c. Hybridization Record Codes:
1. AO - The cat is the product of two cats of different breeds.
2. BO - The cat has at least one grandparent of a different breed.
3. CO - The cat has at least one great grandparent of a different breed.
The following codes apply to the THIRD position of the pedigree status code:

HEAD:

Shape: Wide, inverted pear shaped head with substantial width

to muzzle.

Eyes: Medium to large set far apart. Set on a slight bias. Slightly flattened oval in shape. Eye color independent of coat color except in Pointed Category.

Ears: Medium to large, wide at the base, set as much on the top of the head as on the side, as erect as possible. Ears must be firm at the base, flexible at the tips. Loose relaxed curl ~~with little backward direction~~ of no more than 90º, allowing the tips of the ears to be ~~clearly~~ visible in a frontal view. Ear furnishings and ear tufts are desired but not required. Kittens may have a greater degree of curl but not more than 90º by adulthood.

Muzzle: Full, wide, strong with a definite break. Prominent whisker pads should make muzzle appear squared. Muzzle length makes head appear longer than wide.

Chin: Strong and deep. Must align with top of jaw.

Profile: Rounded back skull, sloping forehead, change of direction at the ~~nose bridge, slight curve to~~ eye ridge, may have a slight concave curve to the nose. Nose, muzzle and chin form a blunt look in profile.

Nose: Wide with substantial nose leather.

BODY:

Torso: Medium to large in size with noticeable depth. Rectangular in shape. Straight back with hips higher than shoulders. Overall muscled, athletic appearance. Males are proportionally larger than females.

Legs: Medium in length, back legs longer than front.

Feet: Medium to large, rounded with large knuckles. Longhair (HD) must have toe tufts.

Tail: Short and thick. Bone length ~~must~~ should be a minimum of 2 one inches in adults with proportional length in kittens. ~~Must~~ Should not extend past the hock. ~~Slight~~ Kinks and curls are allowed.

Boning: Moderately heavy and substantial.

Musculature: Well-muscled.

COAT/COLOR/PATTERN:

Length (HG): Short, dense and resilient.

Length (HD): Longhair up to 2½ inches with shaggy belly hair, longer than the rest of the coat.

Texture: There will be texture variations depending upon the color of the cat.

(HG) Resilient, snapping back into place.

(HD) Soft.

Pattern:

~~Spotted: Random pattern preferred. Spots should be well-defined; may be oval, round, squared or triangular in shape.~~

~~Classic: Will have spots and swirls distinguishing it from the normal classic pattern.~~

Tabby: All tabby patterns are all allowed.

Pointed: Expression of the underlying tabby pattern is desirable.

OTHER:

Balance: All parts of the body in proportion.

Condition: Should reflect excellent health, good muscle tone.

Temperament: Must be unchallenging.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Highlander is a muscular, athletic domestic cat. Selective breeding has contributed to protecting the unique features and enhancing the bloodlines. Highlander cats come in both shorthair and longhair. Physical

characteristics include a sloping forehead and wide nose, with the nose and muzzle forming a blunt look in profile. The curled ear is seen in profile as a loose, relaxed curl ~~with minimal backward direction~~. The ears are wide-based, open and stand tall.

LOCKETS: Withhold all awards

ALLOWANCES: Tarnishing in silvers

PENALIZE: Ears that are not open or wide based, ears too small or low set. ~~Tips of ears not visible from frontal view in adults. Kittens with more than 90 curl~~. Tail too ~~short~~ long.

DISQUALIFY: Ears not erect. Tail too ~~long~~ short or docked.

Temperament must be unchallenging; any sign of definite challenge shall disqualify. The cat may exhibit fear, seek to flee, or generally complain aloud but may not threaten to harm. In accordance with Show Rules, ARTICLE SIXTEEN, the following shall be considered mandatory disqualifications: a cat that bites (216.9), a cat showing evidence of intent to deceive (216.10), adult whole male cats not having two descended testicles (216.11), cats with all or part of the tail missing , except as authorized by a board approved standard (216.12.1), cats with more than five toes on each front foot and four toes on each back foot,

unless proved the result of an injury or as authorized by a board approved standard (216.12.2), visible or invisible tail faults if Board approved standard requires

disqualification (216.12.4), crossed eyes if Board approved standard requires disqualification (216.12.5), total blindness (216.12.6), markedly smaller size, not in keeping with the breed (216.12.9), and depression of the sternum or unusually small diameter of the rib cage itself (216.12.11.1). Well it all started around dinner on July 17, 2008. It was a hot July evening and I had not been running the AC I had my doors and windows opened, the screen door on the porch had a small gap at the bottom, but it never concerned me before, why should it I have left it open like this for years.

I was in the kitchen doing my normal evening work at the stove, I had finished feeding all the big cats outside and now it was time to cook dinner and feed the family inside. I was at the stove starting to cook dinner and two of the cats were at my feet nothing unusual about that, they are always under my feet when I am trying to do things. So, I didn’t think anything of it until the Wookie and Diego keep wanting behind the cabinet. They would come by the stove then go back to the cabinet next to the stove, they both acted like they were watching something behind the cabinet. I thought Diego was after a mouse, so I opened the bottom drawer of the cabinet, he looked in and then went right back to the other side. Mean while the Wookie was intently eyeing something at the back by the wall behind the cabinet, finally I said phooey and just went back to doing dinner.

Later that evening I was here at the computer finishing emails and the motley crew kept banging into my feet on the floor, so I just moved them and they kept it up.

I finally finished the email and looked down to see what the heck all the commotion was about, going on by my feet. Well folk’s turns out my babies all four of them were going after a cottonmouth :) snake that is, LOL. Damn thing had been hanging around my bare feet for a while and the big old Wookie was thumping on him followed by Diego, with the Monkey jumping in to, Lili laid back to watch. I turned on the light to see this snake right next to my garbage can were my feet where and it was striking at my Wookie. That is a no no you do NOT try to hurt my babies!!

So, I yelled for my old man to wake up and help me, try to keep four cats away from a snake when you are trying to catch it. He finally answered me, thought I was kidding, I said get out here and DO NOT bring the Gun. He would have come out with the shotgun and blown a hole through my floor, I've seen him in action when it comes to a snake, shoots anything that moves LOL.

Finally, got the cats out of the way, and a coffee can, over the top of the snake. Picture this; the tail is out from under the can, wahoo, a new toy, all the cats are trying to take turns to get the tail. In the mean time, I am trying to move the can out from under my desk and keep the snake under it. I got the lid and we maneuvered it under the can, part of the snakes body starting coming out. My husband runs and gets a hammer; :) starts beating the snake, the cats want to help. What a disaster.

Got the snake in the can and the lid on it all the kitties are safe from the evil slithering monster toy. Lucky the Wookie is a walking hairball, because that snake struck at him again and again before we had the situation was under control. Everyone was safe and sound, and no harm came to anything with fur but the little slithering reptile, well all I can say is RIP or pieces since my husband does a bit of overkill when it comes to snakes.

Since then, this incident once again repeated itself in June 2010, only this time it was late at night and Lili sounded off like a scream from a banshee waking everyone up at 10:30 pm. This one was a black snake that made its way into our hall between the bathroom and the bedroom. This time the gun came out and shots were fired in the house, but don’t worry we keep them loaded with snake shot during all the warm summer months. No holes in the floor or walls.

All doors in our home are now closed at night.

Could be the Origins of the Highlander Cats

This picture was submitted to the original breeders group by a lady called Gloria. Place and date. Canada 1962. The lady states that cats just like the breed now called Highlanders were running around their Barn at this time and had always done so, some had the polyfeet and curled ears, it doesn't mention whether they had bobtail too but it is assumed they may have . These cats are not a whim of breeders but it is believed a long standing natural breed that had never been recognised or registered at any governing body until recentley when a group of breeders formed a breeding group to breed and promote them

We are keeping the Highlander Breed Group for cats that are registered at TICA or other recognised Governing body...Cats with the same breeding as Highlander titled Highland Lynx/Desert Lynx which cannot be registered at TICA would be best advertised on the sister site The Wild Cat Club TWCC. Any one of the Wild looking Breeds welcome on TWCC.
If the kittens are dual registered TICA Highlander, REFR Highland Lynx. Please keep the reference to them on this site as the Highlander. If spoken about for breeding as part of the Highlander breeding programme. On the TWCC they can be referred to as Highland Lynx. Thanks for your co-operation as this will help to move forward the Highlander breed recognition at TICA. Origin Of The Highlander Cats

The Origin of Highlander Breed:
The Highlander breed first began development in 2004 with its roots tracing back to the
Highland Lynx,. An east coast breeder developed the Highland Lynx in 1993 and although
given the name that included “lynx”, these domestic cats were not of any lynx ancestry. These
cats immediately attracted interest and a devoted following rapidly developed due to their unique
looks, size, and playful, clown-like personalities. Upon welcoming the Highland Lynx into our
homes and families we immediately realized that these cats were special, both in personality and
looks. Uniting together we worked to set up our breeding programs and develop a standard that
we all agreed to adhere to and began working to develop a cat with a “big cat look” in a purely
domestic breed.
In late 2005 we took the name Highlander to further identify our cats as a breed of their own
merit. We worked diligently to educate the public; to bring about an awareness of how special
these cats are, both in personality and looks; and mostly to earn respectability for this breed and
eventual championship status as a member of the cat fancy in one of the largest cat registries in
the world, TICA
Our foundation cats were carefully hand picked for the qualities important to our development in
producing the Highlander’s “big cat look“, with domestic short hair and domestic long hair being
allowed as acceptable outcrosses when needed. It is important to note that Highlanders have
never used any other recognized breed as an outcross.
We have carefully selected each and every Highlander foundation cat by a combination of the
unique Highlander profile that immediately draws attention to the long-sloping forehead, intense
wide-set eyes separated by a wide nose with substantial nose leather that gives the Highlander a
look of its own. The nose, muzzle, and chin form a blunt look, giving an overall boxy
appearance in profile. The Highlander has also maintained the loose curl that affects the top
1/3rd of the ear. It is not a tight curl like the American Curl, and we believe it came from a
Canadian breed called the Hemingway Curl through the Highland Lynx. These incredible
features all tie together to create the unique “big cat” look of the Highlander breed in a domestic
cat.
Highlander breeding programs continue to selectively breed to protect and enhance this
distinctive look as well as to enhance the bloodlines to keep them genetically different and pure
from other breeds.
Although their look is one of power and fierceness, Highlanders are fun-loving,
good-natured cats that constantly entertain their humans with zany antics. They enjoy being the
center of attention.

Spotted : Random pattern preferred. Spots should be well-defined. May be oval, round, squared or triangular in shape. Classic: Will have spots and swirls distinguishing it from the normal classic pattern. Pointed: Expression of the underlying tabby pattern is desirable.

Highlander Breed Standard/TICA
The Highlander (HG) is a medium to large shorthair domestic cat. Well-muscled and feral in looks, the Highlander has the look of the "big cats" in a purely domestic breed. Highlanders are playful and good natured. The Highlander Longhair (HL) is the long hair version.

PERMISSIBLE OUTCROSSES: Domestic longhair/shorthair, not a member of a recognized breed..

HEAD: Shape: Wide inverted pear-shaped head with substantial width to muzzle. Eyes: Medium to large set far apart. Set on a slight bias. Slightly flattened oval in shape. Eye color independent of coat color except in Pointed Category Ears: Medium to large, wide at the base, set as much on the top of the head as on the side, as erect as possible. Ears must be firm at the base, flexible at the tips. Loose relaxed curl with little backward direction, allowing the tips of the ears to be clearly visible in a frontal view. Ear furnishings and ear tufts are desired but not required. Kittens may have a greater degree of curl but not more than 90o. Muzzle: Full, wide, strong with a definite break. Prominent whisker pads should make muzzle appear squared. Muzzle length makes head appear longer than wide. Chin: Strong and deep. Must align with top of jaw. Profile: Rounded back skull, sloping forehead, change of direction at the nose bridge, slight curve to nose. Nose, muzzle and chin form a blunt look in profile Nose: Wide with substantial nose leather

BODY: Torso: Medium to large in size with noticeable depth. Rectangular in shape. Straight back with hips higher than shoulders. Overall muscled, athletic appearance. Males are proportionally larger than females. Legs: Medium in length, back legs longer than front.. Feet: Medium to large, rounded with large knuckles. Longhair (HL) must have toe tufts. Tail: Short and thick. Bone length must be a minimum of 2 inches in adults with proportional length in kittens. Must not extend past the hock. Slight kinks and curls are allowed. Boning: Moderately heavy and substantial. Musculature: Well-muscled.

COAT/COLOR/PATTERN: Length: (HG) Short, dense and resilient. (HL) Long hair up to 2-1/2 inches with shaggy belly hair, longer than the rest of the coat. Texture: There will be texture variations depending upon the color of the cat. (HG) Resilient, snapping back into place (HL) Soft Pattern: Spotted : Random pattern preferred. Spots should be well-defined. May be oval, round, squared or triangular in shape. Classic: Will have spots and swirls distinguishing it from the normal classic pattern. Pointed: Expression of the underlying tabby pattern is desirable.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Highlander began its development in 2004, tracing its roots back to the Highland Lynx. The Highland Lynx that were originally used in the development of the Highlander have no other breeds within a three generation pedigree. The Highlander is a muscular, athletic domestic cat. Selective breeding has contributed to protecting the unique features and enhance the bloodlines. Highlander cats come in both short hair and long hair.

LOCKETS: Withhold All Awards ALLOWANCES: Tarnishing in Silvers PENALIZE: Ears that are not open or wide based, ears too small or low set. Tips of ears not visible from frontal view in adults. Kittens with more than 90o curl. DISQUALIFY: Ears not erect. Tail too short, too long or docked.

Temperament must be unchallenging; any sign of definite challenge shall disqualify. The cat may exhibit fear, seek to flee, or generally complain aloud but may not threaten to harm. In accordance with Show Rules, ARTICLE SIXTEEN, the following shall be considered mandatory disqualifications: a cat that bites (216.9), a cat showing evidence of intent to deceive (216.10), adult whole male cats not having two descended testicles (216.11), cats with all or part of the tail missing , except as authorized by a Board approved standard (216.12.1), cats with more than five toes on each front foot and four toes on each back foot, unless proved the result of an injury or as authorized by a Board approved standard (216.12.2), visible or invisible tail faults if Board approved standard requires disqualification (216.12.4), crossed eyes if Board approved standard requires disqualification (216.12.5), total blindness (216.12.6), markedly smaller size, not in keeping with the breed (216.12.9), and depression of the sternum or unusually small diameter of the rib cage itself (216.12.11.1).
